As a person ages, they begin to see themselves becoming dependent on their family more and more, creating a sense of fear, anxiety, and stress for them. Most come from a generation where the idea was "you fend for yourself and you take care of your family." When this is no longer an option, fear sets in.
How Care Managers Promote Independence in the Elderly
Care Management, on the other hand, is a way to prevent seniors and families from remaining fearful, anxious, and stressed due to lifestyle changes that happen during aging. Care Management is a calling that when responded to for the right reasons, becomes a gift for both a Care Manager and a client. The entire goal of Care Management is to promote independence in the elderly while taking the overwhelming parts of their changing life off of their plate.
Sometimes the care given is received with kindness and love, but other times Care Managers deal with clients that are not so grateful for extra help and care. Fear has entered their minds with all of the "what if's" of what could happen to them now that they can no longer be as independent as they once were.
This is where a Care Manager's value is truly shown. Being able to sit and talk with a client about their goals, wants, and needs is very comforting to them. Once they see the goal is to keep them as independent as possible with help to get them there and stay there, tension and opposition usually fades away. Those fearful thoughts turn into understanding and willingness to progress towards a “ new normal” for them. Care Managers strive and advocate for their clients fiercely and never give up on achieving the client's goals in the most realistic, safe, and independent way for them.
